about

Pete Gofton (Kenickie / Frankie and the Heartstrings) follows excellent albums on Modern Aviation with a new solo album (recorded under his The All Golden alias) with Woodford Halse.

"The loose theme is apocalyptic thinking. Whether it’s the END end,
societal renewal, whatever. I've always been interested in (if not
outright shit scared of when I was a kid) how those things are
sometimes all that’s left of societies, the expectation of their
finish. The Mandate of Heaven, Dogon, all different cultures'
conceptions of their own end and how it’s central to them. Yer Wings
obliquely references the Denver Airport and all the apocalyptic weirdness around it too. Even The Weekend is a birth/death cycle of
sorts.

It’s also an internalised idea of endings and continuing. In the past
few years, I’ve lost both parents and become a dad. When we were
clearing out, we found a poem my dad wrote to me in the 1970s, which was about pretty much that idea. It’s included in the artwork, as I thought it was a nice way to wrap it all up together.

And really, the overarching concept of The All Golden- using tapes I
recorded sometimes decades ago as a creative source- also figures in
this. I began to use these tapes as a way of finishing the music. But
I’ve come to realise, Nothing ever really ends- and I take comfort in
that." P.G.

Lines to my son (14/11/77)

Sleep becomes you
Better; you become sleep
Like a small rose
Perfect in your incarnation
Something of me and mine
Echoing
Far off
When my time is under your feet
And dim at the reaches of your tiredness
Watching your own son
Becoming tomorrow.
